The world of ice and fire is headed to the big screen.

A movie expansion of HBO's "Game of Thrones" is on the way, and it may explore a legendary event from the fictional universe's history that has never before been depicted on screen.

News of a "Thrones" movie was first reported back in 2024, and it's one of numerous projects based on George R.R. Martin's fictional world that are in development, including multiple prequel shows and even a stage play. But the movie has just taken a step forward with news that a writer who worked on an acclaimed sci-fi series is involved.

Here's what we know about the "Game of Thrones" movie so far.

Who's making the 'Game of Thrones' movie?

The script for the "Game of Thrones" movie is being written by Beau Willimon, USA TODAY has learned. The news was first reported by Page Six Hollywood.

A "Game of Thrones" feature film is in development with a screenwriter now attached to the project.

Willimon wrote several episodes of the Emmy-winning "Star Wars" series "Andor," including the show's acclaimed prison break episode from the first season. He previously created the Netflix drama "House of Cards" and wrote the movies "Mary Queen of Scots" and "The Ides of March."

What will the 'Game of Thrones' movie be about?

Warner Bros. hasn't confirmed the plot of the "Game of Thrones" movie, which is expected to be a prequel to the original series.

But Page Six and The Hollywood Reporter both reported the film will likely center on Aegon I Targaryen's conquest of Westeros. Aegon was the very first king to rule the Seven Kingdoms, and he created the Iron Throne itself using the weapons of enemies he defeated.

Emilia Clarke in "Game of Thrones" Season 8.

Aegon's conquest took place around 300 years before the events depicted in the original "Game of Thrones" show, as well as about 100 years before the events of "House of the Dragon." The conquest is referred to frequently throughout Martin's novels and was described in his 2018 faux history book "Fire & Blood," which was also the source material for "House of the Dragon."

The movie, then, wouldn't feature any of the same characters from the "Game of Thrones" TV series, though there would be plenty of franchise iconography like dragons and Targaryens. It would play out essentially like a prequel to "House of the Dragon," which winds the clock back even further than that show.

'Game of Thrones' movie release date, cast

A release date and the cast of the film have yet to be announced. Given how early it is in its development process, the movie is likely years away.

What other 'Game of Thrones' projects are in the works?

HBO already has two "Game of Thrones" prequel series that remain ongoing, including "House of the Dragon," which returns for its third season in June and is set to end with Season 4. There's also "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms," another prequel about the adventures of an ordinary knight that premiered in January. A second season is expected to debut in 2027.

Several other "Thrones" television projects have been in development but don't have firm release dates, including a potential animated series about Corlys Velaryon and his adventures at sea.

The Hollywood Reporter also reports that two rival versions of the story of Aegon's conquest are in the works, one being the aforementioned movie and the other being a drama series. Presumably, only one of these projects will wind up being made.

Outside of TV and film, a stage play is set to premiere in England this summer called "Game of Thrones: The Mad King," a prequel set a decade before the events of the original series featuring established characters like Ned Stark and Robert Baratheon.

'Game of Thrones' star Kit Harington says Jon Snow spinoff is no longer in the works

Though all these expansions of the "Thrones" universe are prequels, a sequel series to the original series was announced in 2022 that was to be centered on Jon Snow, with Kit Harington reprising the role.

By 2024, Harington revealed the show was no longer in active development, though he stopped short of saying it would never happen. "Currently, it's off the table, because we all couldn't find the right story to tell that we were all excited about enough," he told Screen Rant at the time. "So, we decided to lay down tools with it for the time being."
