Feeling an impending sense of doom lately? You're not alone.

Over the last few weeks, thousands on TikTok have resonated with that amorphous dread, and they have a new viral audio to show for it. Across the platform, users have posted their unsettling circumstances — a boyfriend active on social media at 4 a.m. after telling you he was “out with his friends”; a massive line at Chipotle; an especially diabolical meal doing a number on your digestive system — and soundtracked it with a particular saxophone score.

But why — and why are they saying that “the saxophones are getting louder”? Here's everything to know about the trend.

Where did the “saxophones are getting louder” trend originate?

The trend dates back to a Dec. 30 TikTok post by the user “foreverhumblemarc96,” who shared a now-viral screengrab of the 2017 blockbuster Get Out with the overlaid caption, “POV: You in a 90s hood movie about to move out the trenches but you hear them saxophones🎷going crazy so you know you finna get slimed😭”

Though the initial creator only has around 600 followers, the post took off — soaring past 150,000 likes and over 800,000 views. And the audio he used has tens of thousands of videos as well, making it the perfect soundtrack for TikTok users to let out their anxieties about everyday life.

Though the user “foreverhumblemarc96” was instrumental in making the audio viral, the saxophone soundtrack actually originates from the 1991 classic Boyz n the Hood — and the trend is a reference to the movie's plot.

During the movie, the ominous saxophone line starts playing moments before the character Ricky is chased down by rival gang members and shot in the back. The iconic saxophone line, in turn, became a foreboding warning to viewers that something bad was about to happen on screen.

Similar to the way the saxophone soundtracks the moments before disaster strikes in the movie, TikTok users have shared videos with the audio to mark moments they had a sneaking suspicion things would soon take a turn for the worse.

One user soundtracked a video of their homemade shrimp alfredo turning a gnarly brown shade. Another noticed items in their room looked a bit askew when they came home from school. Or a third: A user commenting on the sinking feeling in her stomach when they initiated a conversation with her partner to define their relationship.
