Wendie Malick credits daily exercise, hiking, Pilates and horseback riding for staying active at 75

She emphasizes laughter, gratitude rituals and savoring life's moments as key to her overall well-being

Malick is unsure about a Hot in Cleveland reboot, saying it would feel strange without Betty White

Wendie Malick is opening up about her secrets to staying in shape — including her "love" for a good martini.

During a Shrinking FYC event on Saturday, June 6 at the DGA Theater in Los Angeles, Malick, 75, said that she does try to follow a regular fitness routine and opened up about trying "to stay healthy" in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE.

"Yeah, I exercise pretty much every day," she said. "I've got animals and I live on a ranch. So I hike in the morning with my dog first thing before I have coffee or breakfast or anything. We have horses, so I ride and we have a gym and I do Pilates. And I try to eat well."

"I love martinis, but I'm trying to do a few less of those because I know it's not as good for us as we once thought," Malick explained. "But for the most part I try to stay healthy and not overthink it."

The actress added, "And I think one of the best things you can do is laugh as much as possible. And then you get happy wrinkles. My mom had wrinkles, but they were happy ones because she spent an awful lot of her life in humor. And I think that's a pretty amazing way to go."

She also shared that "funny people" and "animals" never fail to make her laugh. "I have certain friends that just, they can send me around the bend. And I think the stuff that just delights you and makes you giggle," she said, adding that she does a "gratitude ritual every day" in order to help "appreciate what still exists."

She continued, "You know, to savor every moment, especially as you get older and you realize we don't have forever and people get taken out unexpectedly and you don't want to miss it, you know, kind of savor every day."

On the Apple TVseries Shrinking, Malick plays Dr. Julie Baram, who ultimately marries Harrison Ford's character, Dr. Paul Rhoades. The cast also includes Jason Segel, Jessica Williams, Brett Goldstein and more.

"I would say we're friends," Malick said of her off-screen bond with Ford, 83. "We kind of both have other stuff to do and don't hang out in the same circles."

"But I always, I told him the first, you know, when I first started working with him, I'd never met him before. And I'd heard he was a nice guy, but kind of curmudgeonly. And I realized after the first day of working with him, he felt so familiar to me, like someone I had known forever. And I think I told him he was like my favorite old pair of jeans, which is a really high compliment."

Malick was also asked about reuniting with the Hot in Cleveland cast, following former costar Valerie Bertinelli mentioning she wanted to see a reboot of the sitcom.

"I know that, God bless, the gorgeous Betty White isn't with us any longer, but we have to figure out something to do to honor her, to honor the show that people love so much," Bertinelli, 66, previously told PEOPLE on April 30, noting that she has spoken to executive producer Todd Milliner. "So many people are watching it right now, so I want to do a reboot. I'm all in for a reboot."

The sitcom aired from 2010 to 2015 and centered on three friends (played by Malick, Bertinelli and Jane Leeves) living in Cleveland. The house caretaker was played by White, who died at age 99 in December 2021.

Even with Bertinelli hoping for a reboot, Malick wasn't totally sure — especially in a world without White. "I don't know because it would be so weird without Betty," she admitted.

"I don't know," Malick added. "I think sometimes the experience was so wonderful that you want to just savor that and hold on to it and just store it in your heart."
