Stephenson County Sheriff's Office responds to fatal crash

One man is dead and another is injured after what police are calling a head-on collision on Illinois 75 in Stephenson County.

The Stephenson County Sheriff's Office responed to the crash at 11:52 a.m. May 6, according to a news release from the sheriff's office.

The crash took place on Illinois 75 about a half mile east of East Winneshiek Road.

A preliminary investigation indicates that a semitrailer was traveling eastbound on Illinois 75 when it collided with a westbound black sedan, the release states.

According to information shared by the sheriff's office, based on witness statements and evidence, investigators believe the black sedan may have crossed into the eastbound lane.

The driver of the semi is a 57-year-old male. He was taken to Mercyhealth Hospital-Freeport with non-life-threating injuries.

The crash remains under investigation. The identity of the man who died is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
