Disney released a new trailer for Dwayne Johnson's live-action version of Moana
Johnson reprises his role as the demigod Maui in the flesh in the live-action adaptation of the movie; Catherine Laga'aia stars in the title role

Disney is sharing an extended look at Dwayne Johnson as Maui in the live-action version of Moana.
On Monday, March 23, Johnson, 53, and Disney released a new trailer for Moana, in which he reprises his voice role as the fan-favorite demigod from Disney's animated franchise for a live-action adaptation that stars teenaged Catherine Laga'aia in the lead role. A first teaser for the movie debuted in November 2025. The film's full trailer gives audiences a better look at Johnson's long black hair and tattoos as Maui, as well as Laga'iaia's singing voice and familiar favorites like the crab Tamatoa from the original film.
"Moana answers the Ocean’s call and, for the first time, voyages beyond the reef of her island of Motunui with the infamous demigod Maui on an unforgettable journey to restore prosperity to her people," reads an official synopsis for the movie.

Disney’s 2016 animated musical Moana and its 2024 sequel, in which Johnson voiced Maui, became massive box office hits. The Thomas Kail-directed live-action remake, first announced in April 2023, counts among its producers Auli‘i Cravalho and Lin-Manuel Miranda, the voice star and composer behind the original Moana, respectively. In November 2024, photos of a bulked up and bare-chested Johnson surfaced from the live-action movie’s Hawaiʻi set. "That [suit] is a couple of hours every day of transforming, putting that on,” he later clarified to Extra about his character’s look.

John Tui, who appeared in Johnson's autobiographical NBC series Young Rock, costars with Laga'aia as Moana's father Chief Tui. Frankie Adams plays Moana's mom Sina and Rena Owen stars as her grandmother, Gramma Tala.

Disney’s upcoming live-action remakes of animated hits also includes a Hercules movie, as well a live-action sequel to last year's Lilo & Stitch. The live-action remake of Moana is in theaters July 10.
