Fresh off their return from the United States, King Charles and Queen Camilla are hosting their first garden party of the year. Wednesday also marks another special occasion for the couple: the third anniversary of their coronation.

Each summer, the Sovereign usually hosts an average of three garden parties at Buckingham Palace and one at Holyroodhouse in Scotland, honoring members of the public for community service. This year, the garden parties are scheduled quite close together. The next one at Buckingham Palace will be this Friday, May 8, and the third will be Tuesday, May 12. The Edinburgh fête will take place on Tuesday, June 30.

However, this year there will be two additional, themed garden parties. The first will be on Thursday, May 14, celebrating the 50th anniversary of King Charles’s foundation, The King’s Trust. Another will follow on Tuesday, May 19 supporting The Not Forgotten, a UK charity dedicated to the physical and mental health of military veterans and service members.

More than 30,000 people are invited to the garden parties collectively each summer. It’s estimated that at each event, guests consume about 27,000 cups of tea, 20,000 sandwiches, and 20,000 slices of cake. Guests are nominated by a national network of sponsors, and invitations cannot be requested directly. The parties begin with the royal family’s arrival and the national anthem, followed by more music and informal meetings with guests. Guests are then invited to enjoy tea and explore the palace gardens.

There is a special dress code for palace garden parties, but it’s a bit more casual as far as royal events go. Men typically wear morning dress or suits, and women wear day dresses with hats or fascinators. National dress and uniforms are also common.
