Fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer bid adieu to the supernatural drama way back in 2003 after watching seven seasons of Buffy Summers, the Slayer, destroy vampires and other evils in her California hometown, Sunnydale.

The show’s star, Sarah Michelle Gellar, has always indicated that her role as Buffy was a closed chapter. On February 3, Variety reported that Hulu was very close to ordering a pilot for a reboot and that Gellar was in “final talks to once again play the iconic title character.”

However, in March 2026, the star announced on Instagram that the streaming service would not be moving forward, despite a year of development and cast announcements.

Up until now, here’s the backstory behind the reboot.

Was the Buffy reboot confirmed?

Gellar herself confirmed that these talks were happening. On Feb. 6, 2025, she posted on Instagram about the reports, including a shot of herself from the series in which her character is saying, “If the apocalypse comes, beep me.”

“So….. you might have heard some news this week, but I realize you haven’t heard from me,” Gellar wrote in the caption.

Gellar explained that she’s always said no to the possibility of bringing Buffy back, but after talking to her friend, producer and executive Gail Berman, she became open to a conversation with director Chloé Zhao.

“She told me that she wanted me to sit down with Chloé Zhao to hear her take on a potential Buffy revival,” Gellar wrote. “I was blown away that Chloé even knew who I was, but, as I’ve always done, I told Gail that I just didn’t see a way for the show to exist again...And our 20-minute coffee quickly turned into a four-hour adventure. We laughed, we cried, but mostly we both talked about how much this show means to us.”

They didn’t decide anything then, but they kept having conversations.

“These conversations did, in fact, continue over the next few years and eventually we added the incredible Nora and Lilla Zuckerman to our little tribe until ultimately, one day, we landed on an idea,” the actress announced. “But it was not something I could do unless I was sure we would get it right. This has been a long process, and it’s not over yet. I promise you, we will only make this show if we know we can do it right. And I will tell you that we are on the path there.”

She concluded, “Thank you to all the fans who never stopped asking for this. This will be for you.”

But on March 14, 2026, Gellar shared that Hulu has decided not to move forward with the reboot.

“I am really sad to have to share this, but I wanted you all to hear it from me. Unfortunately, Hulu has decided not to move forward with Buffy: New Sunnydale,” she said the video. “I want to thank Chloé Zhao, because I never thought I would find myself back in Buffy’s stylish yet affordable boots. And thanks to Chloé, I was reminded how much I love her and how much she means not only to me but to all of you. And this doesn’t change any of that, and I promise if the apocalypse actually comes, you can still beep me.”

What was the Buffy reboot supposed to be about?

Per Deadline, the pilot was meant to “star Ryan Kiera Armstrong [an introverted high school student] as the chosen one, following in the footsteps of Gellar’s Buffy Summers.”

Who was set to return for the Buffy reboot?

Clearly, Gellar intended to be a big part of the show. There were no official announcements from other former cast members, several of whom played ageless vampires. In an interview with RadioTimes.com, Juliet Landau, who played the vampire Drusilla, insisted she’d love to return.

“My gosh, yes. It would be so much fun to play, absolutely,” she shared. “In terms of what everybody [the fanbase] is saying is that they really want that mix of original cast members and new talent as well. And so I think that will be a key element...I think it is perfect timing for a reboot...Buffy, the original series, is more popular now than even when it was popular on the air. It just continues to grow and grow, and a brilliant team has been assembled.”

David Boreanaz, who played Buffy’s vampire love interest Angel, simply commented on her post, “Excited for you and your journey. Enjoy the moments and continue to always give back to the fans. God Speed.”

Charisma Carpenter, who played Cordelia Chase, wrote, “Could there be a more relevant time for such a story?! Long live the slayer, long live the slayer in us all! Congratulations Sarah.”

And Seth Green, Oz the werewolf, wrote, “I’ll always love that we’re in two separate Scooby gangs together.”

While much is implied in these replies, nothing is certain.

In May 2025, Gellar shared a series of black-and-white pics with Alyson Hannigan, who starred in the original show as Buffy’s bestie, Willow. She captioned the pics with the hashtag #OG, but nothing official was ever announced.

The creative team includes Nora Zuckerman and Lila Zuckerman as writers, showrunners, and executive producers, with Chloé Zhao directing. Gellar and Berman are also listed as executive producers, as well as Fran and Kaz Kuzui, and Dolly Parton, according to Variety.

In a Collider interview on November 5, Armstrong spoke about Gellar’s mentorship while filming the Hulu sequel. “I can’t talk too much about Buffy,” she said. “She’s just as lovely as she seems on camera. She’s such a great person. She went through Buffy. One of the first things she said to me was, ‘I will protect you. I’ll help guide you.’ It still gets me. I love Sarah.”

Who was new to the cast?

In May 2025, Firestarter actress Ryan Kiera Armstrong was announced as the new slayer for the upcoming reboot.

Gellar shared a video in which she is breaking the news to Armstrong in an adorable video shared on Instagram.

“From the moment I saw Ryan’s audition, I knew there was only one girl that I wanted by my side,” Gellar said in a statement. “To have that kind of emotional intelligence, and talent, at such a young age is truly gift. The bonus is that her smile lights up even the darkest room.”

On August 1, Gellar shared a video montage on Instagram of training alongside Armstrong at the gym to get into Slayer shape.

On August 11, Deadline reported that Chase Sui Wonders (The Studio) had joined the reboot. According to the outlet, Wonders will play a vampire named Shirley, and she’ll appear as a guest star in the pilot, directed by Chloé Zhao.

After news that the show would not move forward came out, Armstrong shared a message as well.

“I’m sure many of you have already heard the news by now,” Armstrong said in an Instagram Story shared on March 14. “I wanted to come on here and say thank you for all of the support that you guys have given me and this show throughout the last couple months. It’s been really special.”

Armstrong added that she was “really proud” of their work and was “sad that [fans] won’t be able to see it.”

She continued, “It doesn’t take away from the amazing experience that I had,” before thanking Gellar, Zhao, and writers Lilla Zuckerman and Nora Zuckerman.

“I also want to say thank you to all the fans who believed in this new chapter, and who believed in me, so thank you guys,” she said. “Thank you to the cast I worked with. You guys are awesome.”

The actress concluded, “I guess all I want to say is we brought this back for you guys and Buffy is such a big part of all of our lives. It’s not going anywhere! Who knows what the future will hold?”

Did production start?

Yes! In a March 2025 interview with People, Gellar said that things were “progressing faster” than she thought and some moves were being made.

“We’ve set up our offices, which means things are progressing probably faster than I’d anticipated,” she said. “But it’s going to be a process, I think.”

“To do it the way it needs to be done, everyone has to be patient with all of us, because this isn’t something that [will just happen],” she added.

But things seemed to be up-and-running by August. Gellar was photographed in her first look during shooting in Los Angeles on August 7, wearing a bright red dress with a deep V-neckline, long sleeves, and fabric florals at the waist. To make a monochromatic look, Gellar carried a red purse and wore red heels.
