In Project Hail Mary, Ryan Gosling plays a reluctant astronaut on a mission to save Earth from total disaster. In a recent interview, the 45-year-old actor was similarly heroic toward a journalist stranded on the side of the road.

Good Day Chicago reporter Jake Hamilton started his interview with Gosling — which has since gone viral on Instagram — while standing outside in the desert. As Hamilton dove into Gosling's upcoming sci-fi adventure, the actor expressed concern about whether the journalist was in need of a rescue.

"Do you have help on the way?" the three-time Oscar nominee asked, before joking that it looked like Hamilton was reporting from inside a volcano.

In truth, Hamilton had been on a tour of the Grand Canyon prior to his interview time with the Barbie star. But when the tour bus broke down, he had to improvise.

"Obviously, I would do anything not to miss an interview with you," Hamilton told Gosling.

And so Hamilton set himself up on the side of the road, with cars whizzing behind him and fellow tour bus passengers in the distance. Given the rocky, alien backdrop, it seemed the perfect setting to ask Gosling about a movie where he teams up with an alien nicknamed "Rocky." (An entertaining setting as well, with Rachel Zegler even commenting on the video, writing "dude he is so me.")

Gosling had a different movie in mind.

"You look like Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible," he remarked, comparing Hamilton's look to that of Ethan Hunt's in the spy series' second installment.

Amid interview questions, Gosling made sure Hamilton had enough supplies to survive, while also suggesting it might be helpful to "squirrel" some away.

"That could get ugly," he said, before providing a useful slogan of "ABS, man: Always Be Squirreling."

Hamilton let Gosling know he would be just fine, because he had two essentials for a reporter in his situation: "I've got water and I've got hair products."
