Ryan Gerard explains DP World Tour decision amid looming golf suspension

Ryan Gerard's season isn’t quite over yet as he has a few more duties to fulfill over on the DP World Tour.

Gerard made his debut at the Tour Championship this year and played alongside eventual runner-up Viktor Hovland, as the 27-year-old finished solo-third after entering the final round one back and carding a two-over 72.

It marked his fourth top-three finish and seventh top-10 of the season, but he’s not done yet. "I need to play two more DP World Tour events to maintain not being suspended from their Tour,” said Gerard after a near win at the Tour Championship at East Lake.

Gerard is hoping for a President’s Cup spot this year alongside the World No. 1 and BMW Championship winner Wyndham Clark, so he’s gotta prepare to be at the top of his game. But, he’s not in the top-12 of the FedEx Cup points, as six qualify and six more are chosen by the captain, so he has a chance.

“I'd love to kind of roll into there being a little bit more prepared,” said Gerard. “I like to play a lot of golf. And if I don't, I'll probably just stay over there and play Wentworth and the France Open after that.”

Gerard’s season includes 11 top-25 finishes and just over $10,004,898 in official money, and almost a full calendar of 26 Tour events.

“A bit of a weird stretch of the year for me. I like playing lots of golf,” said Gerard. “I feel like I'm at my most prepared when I'm in kind of a rhythm. I'll be ready for whatever the future holds, but I need to get a couple more events in.”

Gerard has a red-eye booked for next week’s DP World Tour event, and he still has work left to do after losing just barely at the Tour Championship to two Ryder Cup stars.

“I've just got to play better,” said Gerard.

“Just got to be more on it from just a swing and a control standpoint. I feel like it wasn't that far off, but they made it as difficult as they could today, and that's kind of what we were looking for. I just wasn't on enough to execute shots to really tucked hole locations.”

He’ll continue his season on the European circuit, reflecting deeply on his time on the PGA Tour as the season comes to an end and Scheffler brings home the title.

“I think if I just keep giving myself chances, eventually one's going to go in. Like I won last year,” said Gerard. “I've given myself a few opportunities this year. I have no doubt in my mind that, if I continue putting myself in solid positions, I'll get it done.

“It's not for a lack of effort. It's not for a lack of mentality. It's just I didn't have it as well as I needed it today and just grinded it out hard.”
