The bodies of Hollywood director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele Singer Reiner, have been returned to their family following their fatal stabbings.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's office confirmed Friday, Dec. 19, that it has completed its autopsies, establishing that the cause of their deaths was multiple sharp force injuries.
The two were found dead at their Brentwood-area home in Los Angeles on Sunday, Dec. 14. Rob was 78 and Michele was 70.
Their son Nick Reiner, 32, has been charged with two counts of first-degree murder with a special circumstance of multiple murders and faces a special allegation that he used a dangerous and deadly weapon in his parent's killing.
Nick Reiner has spoken openly during the years about his addiction struggles, and he previously told a podcaster that he suffered from a "cocaine heart attack" at his parents' guest house where he started "punching out different things."

The couple's children are asking for privacy as they grieve their parents' death, and the Los Angeles District Attorney is not ruling out the death penalty for Nick.
In a statement shared with TMZ and People on Wednesday, the two remaining siblings, Jake and Romy, spoke out.
"Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day," they said. "The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience. They weren't just our parents; they were our best friends."

Nick Reiner appears in court, faces murder charges
The couple's 32-year-old son briefly appeared in court for a hearing Dec. 17, after being medically cleared. Reiner is facing charges on two counts of first-degree murder with a special circumstance of multiple murders. He also faces a special allegation of using a dangerous and deadly weapon. Reiner's next court date, the arraignment, is scheduled for Jan. 7.
Outside the courtroom, Nick's attorney, Alan Jackson, called the case a "devastating tragedy."
"Our hearts go out to the entire Reiner family," he said. "There are very, very complex and serious issues that are associated with this case."

He continued: "We ask that during this process, you allow the system to move forward in the way that it was designed to move forward, not with a rush to judgment, not with jumping to conclusions, but with restraint and with dignity and with the respect that this system and this process deserves and that the family deserves."
"We are grateful for the outpouring of condolences, kindness, and support we have received not only from family and friends but people from all walks of life," the statement continued. "We now ask for respect and privacy, for speculation to be tempered with compassion and humanity, and for our parents to be remembered for the incredible lives they lived and the love they gave."
Rob Reiner also shared a daughter, Tracy Reiner, with ex-wife, Penny Marshall. He adopted Tracy, Marshall's daughter from a previous marriage.
