It’s been a whirlwind awards season for Renate Reinsve. The Norwegian actress has been recognized for her performance in the comedy-drama Sentimental Value at almost every major awards show, including the Golden Globes and the BAFTAs. Five years after making a splash on the movie scene in The Worst Person in the World, Reinsve is back at the Oscars, outfitted in a sleek red strapless dress by Louis Vuitton with an asymmetrical draping effect.

Reinsve is also making history at this year’s Oscars. She’s the first Norwegian actress to be nominated for Best Actress since Liv Ullmann, for the Swedish-language film Face to Face, in 1976.

Sentimental Value is Reinsve’s third collaboration with director Joachim Trier. Along with The Worst Person in the World, for which she won Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival in 2021, Reinsve also appeared in Trier’s Oslo, August 31st in 2011. The movie follows two sisters, Nora (Reinsve) and Agnes (Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas) in their reunion with their estranged father Gustav (Stellan Skarsgård), a once-renowned director. Gustav offers Nora a role in what he hopes will be his comeback film. She turns it down, but soon discovers he's given the part to an eager young Hollywood star (Elle Fanning). The two siblings must now navigate a complicated relationship with their father while also dealing with an American actress, who Nora believes Gustav is treating with more empathy than his own daughters.

“I think we recognize something in each other, the playfulness, and to be able to laugh about these things and be curious and also go really deep into these themes,” Reinsve told Deadline about working with Trier. “And we kind of have the same questions about it, not necessarily wanting an answer, but seeing the complexities and seeing what it is and the way you write your characters and your scripts. They’re so complex and they’re so dynamic and characters, they are never judged with all their chaos.”
