Matthew Perry’s sister has revealed the heartbreaking reason his wedding episode on Friends was bittersweet for their family, as they worried whether he would ever get to experience marriage in real life.
The actor, who played Chandler Bing on the hit sitcom, married Courteney Cox’s character, Monica Geller, during the season seven finale in 2001. While the episode was a happy moment for the characters, Perry’s family knew he wanted the same things for himself but was struggling with addiction.
Mia Perry Bowick discussed the emotional experience in an interview with People published Wednesday, ahead of her appearance in an upcoming Netflix documentary about her brother. This comes just after details about the upcoming docuseries surrounding Perry's addiction and death were released.

“When we saw that wedding, we all knew that he had wanted that in life. He wanted a partner and he wanted kids,” she said. “We all knew how serious his disorder was, so there was this sense of, ‘Who knows what’s going to happen?’”
Perry never married or had children before his death in October 2023, aged 54. He died from the acute effects of ketamine, with drowning, coronary artery disease, and the effects of buprenorphine also listed in his official autopsy report.

The actor had spoken openly about his struggles with addiction in his 2022 memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing. In the book, he revealed that after filming the wedding scene between Chandler and Monica, he was taken straight back to treatment. He wrote that he was immediately “driven back to the treatment center… in a pickup truck helmed by a sober technician” after the scene wrapped.
Perry also explained how his changing appearance throughout the show’s run reflected his struggles with substance abuse.

“When I’m carrying weight, it’s alcohol; when I’m skinny, it’s pills. When I have a goatee, it’s lots of pills,” he wrote. He went on to describe the severity of his addiction by the end of the show’s third season, revealing he was trying to obtain 55 Vicodin pills a day or he would get “so sick.”
Despite his struggles, Perry had a long dating history and was romantically linked to several high-profile women over the years, including Gwyneth Paltrow and Julia Roberts in the 1990s. He later dated Mean Girls star Lizzy Caplan from 2006 to 2012. In November 2020, Perry revealed he had proposed to literary manager Molly Hurwitz, but the pair split six months later.
At the time, Perry confirmed the breakup in a statement through his representative, saying, “Sometimes, things just don’t work out, and this is one of them. I wish Molly the best.”
In his memoir, Perry also revealed that he had been “high as a kite” when he proposed to Hurwitz and did not remember the engagement afterward.
“I didn’t remember — needless to say, we broke up,” he wrote.

Now, Bowick is preparing to speak publicly about her brother’s death for the first time in the upcoming Netflix documentary, The One About Matthew Perry, which premieres on Oct. 27. The three-episode series will feature her reflections alongside commentary from several of Perry’s longtime friends.
The documentary is set to arrive just one day before the third anniversary of Perry’s death. He was found dead in his hot tub at his California home on Oct. 28, 2023.
In August 2024, five people were arrested as part of the investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death. Perry’s longtime assistant, Kenneth Iwamasa, 61, and four others, including Jasveen Sangha, known as the “Ketamine Queen,” were accused of profiting from the actor’s addiction.
Sangha was sentenced to 15 years in prison for her role in Perry’s death, while Iwamasa received a sentence of three years and five months.
