It’s a role so coveted it only goes by a single letter — A — and yet still has scores of actors wanting to play it. And many of them, in turns out, will.

*Pre-Existing Condition,* which played a sold-out run in 2024 at the Connelly Theater in New York City, will be returning to a NYC stage this September at the Greenwich House Theater, and with an all-star cast once again alternating in the lead role.

** can exclusively report that Lupita Nyong’o, Edie Falco, Phillipa Soo, Hari Nef, and Susannah Flood will be among the actors taking turns in the lead role of A, with more names being announced at a later date. (Greg Keller, Dael Orlandersmith, and Sarah Steele will also appear in the play.)

Each of the announced performers has a history on New York stages. Academy Award winner Nyong’o received a Tony nomination for starring on Broadway in *Eclipsed* (written by *Walking Dead* star Danai Gurira) while also appearing in last year’s Shakespeare in the Park production of *Twelfth Night.*

Emmy winner Falco has a handful of Broadway and Off Broadway credits, including being part of *Pre-Existing Condition*’s original 2024 rotation (along with Tatiana Maslany, Julia Chan, Maria Dizzia, Deirdre O’Connell, and Tavi Gevinson).

Soo is most famous for her celebrated run on the cultural touchstone that is *Hamilton*, while Nef last appeared Off Broadway in *Des Moines*, and Flood is coming hot off a Tony-nominated performance in the Pulitzer- and Tony Award-winning *Liberation*.

Written by Marin Ireland (herself an actress who has starred on TV's *Sneaky Pete* and *The Umbrella Academy* and appeared last year on stage in *Queens*) and directed by Maria Dizzia, *Pre-Existing Condition* tells the story of a character wrestling with trauma in the aftermath of an abusive relationship.

Ireland and Dizzia had this to say about the new production and casting in a joint statement released to EW: “We are thrilled and honored to be able to bring the play back at Greenwich House this fall and continue the tradition of rotating the actors playing the central role. We have assembled a dazzling group of women to add to the legacy of our first production — Lupita, Phillipa, Susannah, Hari, and Edie are each incredibly dynamic powerhouses, bringing new and singular perspectives.”

The duo continues: “Actors sharing the role creates a community inside this production, and we can’t wait for that community to expand to audiences in September. Our hope is that this play has a chance to do what theater does best: make someone feel less alone, hold them in sacred space with others, and shed light in the places we need it most.”

The new production will begin Sept. 1, with an opening night set for Sept. 14, and performances continuing through Oct. 25.
