Kacey Musgraves Claps Back at Fans Criticizing Her Scrotally Inspired Tour Prop: ‘Takes a Lot of Balls to Get Up Here’

Kacey Musgraves uses giant, anatomically correct disco balls as a cheeky prop during her Middle of Nowhere Tour

The singer humorously addressed fan criticism of the prop, saying, “Maybe you can get in front of them”

Musgraves credits her grandmother for inspiring her bold choices, joking about her approval of the sparkly stage setup

Kacey Musgraves has a ballsy comeback for a fan criticizing her new tour prop.

The 38-year-old country star kicked off her Middle of Nowhere Tour on Aug. 21 with a decidedly cheeky addition to her stage setup: two enormous, sparkly disco balls that are anatomically correct.

Musgraves rides around on the disco balls during her performance of “Rhinestoned,” making sure there’s little confusion about what exactly she’s going for.

“This is what it looks like when no one tells me no,” she joked with the crowd.

And while the giant disco balls might not be for everyone, Musgraves seems to be having plenty of fun with them.

The singer recently joked about the prop during a show where her grandmother, affectionately known as Nana, was in the audience.

“It takes a lot of balls to get up here and do what I do every night,” she said. “It takes two gigantic, anatomically correct sparkly balls. I’ve actually got my Nana in the house tonight, and she always told me, ‘Honey, if you’re gonna do something, do it big, do it sparkly.’ Nana, is this what you had in mind?”

It’s not the first time Musgraves has worried about what her grandmother might think of her increasingly cheeky material. The singer has previously said Nana wasn’t exactly a fan of “Dry Spell,” one of the more sexually suggestive songs on her latest album, which was released on May 1.

“I’ve never talked about self-pleasure before. So that’s a first for me: ‘Sitting on the washing machine.’ It’s not my grandma’s favorite line, but it’s mine, I guess,” the “Mexico Honey” singer explained.

Musgraves has also spoken about whether Nana has seen the “Dry Spell” music video, which features plenty of sexual imagery and opens with the country singer holding an eggplant.

While filming the video, Musgraves received a text from her dad that Nana had been rushed to the hospital after experiencing a health issue. She recalled being on the phone and crying as she thought about her grandmother seeing the finished video.

“I don’t know if she’ll laugh,” Musgraves said. “Actually, in the middle of filming the video, I got a text from my dad that Nana had to be rushed to the hospital: She had a really scary extreme high blood pressure incident. So I had to leave and I was on the call, crying, like, ‘If Nana lives, she’s gonna hate this video!’”

Musgraves has continued to joke about the sexual themes on her album, including the disco-ball prop, at shows as the Middle of Nowhere Tour has made its way through Boston and New York City. But the singer’s sense of humor isn’t limited to the giant glittery balls.

During her Boston show, part of the stage lighting caught on fire, prompting Musgraves to once again address the situation.

“That looks bad. Genuinely, something’s on fire. I have way too much hairspray to be standing under that s---,” she said. “I only like pyro when I know what’s going to happen. Does anyone have a bedazzled fire extinguisher? It’s doing more things… Anyway, here’s ‘Wonderwall.’”

As for the disco balls, Musgraves got an even more direct response when a fan voiced their displeasure in the comments of an Instagram carousel she shared from the tour: “I can’t get behind the large testicles I’m sorry.”

Musgraves wasn’t about to let that one go unanswered.

“Well, maybe you can get in front of them,” the singer replied to the comment made in her Aug. 29 Instagram post.

The Middle of Nowhere Tour kicked off Aug. 21 in Chicago and will continue through Feb. 26, 2027, when Musgraves wraps the tour in London.
