Joe Biden and Jill Biden were "so proud" of their son Hunter Biden for speaking openly about his recovery from addiction.
During the Monday, August 17, episode of "The Jamie Kern Lima Show," Jill reflected on what she saw as a meaningful new chapter for her son.
"I do believe a lot of times that good things come from bad things, and I think now is Hunter’s time to shine," the former first lady said.
She continued, "You know, he’s doing really good things."

The educator also recalled the emotional toll of watching her son’s struggles become part of his legal proceedings. She reflected on what she believed allowed Hunter to speak about his experiences.
"You know, that he can be so honest and say things other people won’t say, and feel comfortable with it because he’s been through it," Jill said.

In June 2024, the 56-year-old was found guilty of federal gun felonies. During the proceedings, details about his years of drug use, including his time in motel rooms and encounters with s-- workers, became public.
Joe, 83, later pardoned his son in December 2024.
The 75-year-old recalled what she witnessed when Hunter’s personal history was discussed in court.
"And it’s just, I don’t know, but as parents, one of the toughest things I had to do was when Hunter was taken to court, and they played his book on tape in the courtroom, to hear him tell his story in his own words. I mean, it was so heartbreaking," she said.
However, in recent months, Hunter has increasingly used social media to discuss addiction, sobriety and his experiences with recovery. His posts have ranged from humorous moments to more serious messages aimed at people dealing with similar struggles.

One of Hunter’s most candid moments came in June when he shared a video discussing his sobriety and his complicated relationship with his past.

He added, "And I don’t say that with even the slightest bit of irony or b-------."

Jill also reflected on the response to Hunter’s decision to discuss his experiences publicly.
"Something good’s happening," she said of the response to Hunter’s online commentary.
She added, "Well, for so long it was taboo. Like, you didn’t talk about it. I mean, people just would never, ever say, 'You know, my child is an addict,' and, and I couldn’t say it."
The former president’s wife also discussed recording the audiobook for her memoir, View from the East Wing: A Memoir, which was recently published.
"I mean, even when I read my book, my audiobook, you know, I had written it, I had thought about it, but when I had to say it out loud during the audio session, they must have stopped three times," Jill said.
She continued, "I just would start to sob. I just couldn’t say the words. It was just too hard."
