A Nightmare on Elm Street star Robert Englund served as a marriage witness for two fans ahead of their Halloween wedding.

Englund, the 78-year-old actor best known for his portrayal of the villainous Freddy Krueger, had the honor of signing Adrian Barcelona and Sarah Weidner's marriage certificate during his appearance at ScareFest Weekend at Central Bank Center in Lexington, Kentucky, on Saturday, Oct. 18. He even celebrated the special day by posting a photo of him signing the paperwork across from the couple as they happily watched, writing on Instagram, "Just Married! I witnessed their marriage today!"

Barcelona and Weidner legally tied the knot in a mini ceremony at the horror convention — deemed "The Sinister Side of Comic-Con" — that day dressed in red and green, the colors of the burn-scarred dream demon's striped sweater. The groom opted for a green suit with a red bow tie while his bride wore a formal red gown and a green veil with lace detailing on the bottom. Weidner also surprised Barcelona with a wedding band designed like Freddy Krueger's iconic glove with razor-sharp blades.

The couple will have a larger wedding celebration on Halloween.

"Mr. Englund was extremely sweet and such a pleasure to be with," Barcelona exclusively tells PEOPLE. "We also thank Mrs. Englund for helping make all this happen. They both went above and beyond. This was not only a perfect wedding gift for us, but also the perfect homage to my dad."

Barcelona, who has been a preschool teacher for more than two decades, explains that the reason behind his horror-themed nuptials and desire for Englund to be one of his marriage witnesses ties back to his late father.

"The first horror movie I ever watched was with my dad on Halloween, which was, of course, A Nightmare on Elm Street. He was a fan of Mr. Englund himself," Barcelona says. "As I grew older, I would see my dad every single Halloween and we would watch the Nightmares together."

He continues, "Eventually, I was introduced to the world of comic and horror conventions, and I found one where Robert Englund would be there. Unfortunately, only three months after I bought the tickets for us to go together, my dad went through surgery and passed away. Now, we still keep that tradition alive by watching the Nightmare movies every Halloween."

After Barcelona proposed in December 2024, he "spent a lot of time searching" for conventions where Englund was scheduled to appear.

"I came across a website where you can request to have a movie icon send a video greeting or message. At the time, Mr. Englund's account was paused due to other projects, so I checked back constantly," Barcelona says. "Finally, after about a month, his account un-paused, and I immediately sent a message asking if he could please be a witness to our marriage certificate."

Englund's wife, Nancy, responded saying she received the message. The next day, Barcelona and Weidner received a video message from Englund himself saying "he would be honored" to witness their marriage.

After "months of planning," it was time for ScareFest.

"We received a message from Mr. Englund's assistant to meet him and his staff in between his very busy schedule," Barcelona explains. "He passed along well wishes from his wife and took ten minutes of his own time to speak with us."

Englund gave the pair his best marriage advice, with Barcelona remembering him saying, "Marriage between two people is made up of shared experiences between those two people. There will be a whole spectrum of feelings and events ranging from happy to unpleasant to peaceful, good and bad, all manner of memories and inside references, that all combine to form a connection that is ultimately shared only between the two of you, and this is very precious."

Barcelona vows to take the actor's advice "to heart."

Barcelona and Weidner met on a dating app, and have been in a relationship for three years. Their Halloween wedding plans include them taking their closest friends and family members to a haunted house and a spooky hayride followed by a reception dinner.

"Finally, we will end the night by watching A Nightmare on Elm Street with plenty of buttered popcorn," Barcelona says.
