14 Five Guys locations will close across multiple states in 2026, according to reports

Despite closures, the chain has recently opened new stores and says it is continuing global expansion efforts, so the net effect of the closures is unclear

The closures will reportedly lead to the loss of dozens of jobs

Five Guys locations are quietly closing around the country.

The company has closed or will close at least 14 locations across several states in 2026, according to analysis by Fast Company. Per the outlet, multiple locations have closed in California, while others have shuttered in Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Louisiana, Georgia and Nebraska.

According to Fast Company, four locations have closed in California in 2026 in Tracy, Bakersfield, Rancho Mirage and Valencia. The outlet also reported that locations closed in Tampa, Fla., Naperville, Ill., Dubuque, Iowa, Lake Charles, La., Atlanta, Ga. and Lincoln, Neb.

The following addresses have closed, per the outlet:

2970 W Grant Line Rd, Tracy, CA 95304

2701 Ming Ave, Bakersfield, CA 93304

71-800 Hwy 111 Rancho Mirage, CA 92270

24201 Valencia Blvd #3672, Valencia, CA 91355

6431 E County Line Rd, Tampa, FL 33647

2856 S Rte 59, Naperville, IL 60564

3450 Dodge St Suite B, Dubuque, IA 52003

2950 Ryan St, Lake Charles, LA 70601

3393 Peachtree Rd NE, Atlanta, GA 30326

2525 Pine Lake Rd, Lincoln, NE 68512

PEOPLE confirmed via Google Maps that these locations are permanently closed.

Fast Company also reported that local outlets such as the Merced Sun Star have received Worker Adjustment Retraining Notification (WARN) notices, which noted that dozens of jobs will be eliminated by further Five Guys closures in California.

The other four stores that the outlet reported will close in May, June and July 2026 are located in Whittier, Industry, Merced and Hanford, California, at the following locations:

10140 Carmenita Rd, Whittier, CA 90605, which will close on May 25, 2026

1552 S Azusa Ave, City of Industry, CA 91748, which will close on May 26, 2026

3572 G St, Merced, CA 95340, which is closing on June 26, 2026

1693 W Lacey Blvd Suite A, Hanford, CA 93230, which is closing on July 2, 2026

According to The Street, California state WARN filings by Five Guys Operations confirm the closures of multiple locations, and data reveals that the upcoming four California closures are due to “financial hardship.”

The outlet reported that the four closures will mark a loss of 55 jobs.

It remains unclear whether the closures are contributing to a decline of Five Guys locations overall.

Fast Company noted that the overall U.S. footprint of the brand increased in recent years. Per QSR Magazine, Five Guys said in a franchise disclosure document that it ended 2024 with a net gain of 35 stores for 2023.

QSR Magazinealso said the chain closed 28 restaurants that year.

According to Five Guys' website, the chain recently opened locations in Covington, Ga., on March 10, Manvel, Texas, on March 2, Lakewood Ranch, Fla., on Feb. 23 and Jackson, Miss., on Feb. 11.

The website said the family-owned chain has 1,517 locations in the U.S., with over 1,950 locations worldwide in 29 countries. The chain's media fact sheet shares that the brand has “1,500 units” currently “in development,” as the chain “moves to expand its global footprint even further.”

The website also adds that the chain is open to franchise inquiries in Europe, the Middle East and in the Asia-Pacific region. It noted, however, that franchise opportunities are “sold out” in the U.S. and Canada, where “franchisees are actively developing their territories.”

Five Guys did not immediately reply to PEOPLE's request for comment.

The fast food chain recently came under fire for a failed buy one, get one (BOGO) offer as part of a celebration of its 40th anniversary.

To make amends with his employees who had to deal with the ramifications of the botched deal, CEO Jerry Murrell, 82, gave out $1.5 million in employee bonuses, per an interview with Fortune.

“I didn't want anybody shooting me in the back or anything after the first day, because we really screwed it up. We had no idea that we were going to get that kind of response,” the CEO joked to the outlet.

The brand announced in a press release a redemption BOGO promotion after the first event met unprecedented demand, including running out of food, long lines and overwhelmed workers.

“They worked so hard. They were so overwhelmed,” Murrell said of his employees.

The release said that Five Guys was giving their employees bonuses for “the way they performed under pressure” while being put in “an incredibly difficult position.”

Per Fortune, the second promotion, which took place from March 9 to March 12, was a success.

“The crew did good that day, because they were prepared, but they worked so hard that I thought, now I better give them a bonus,” Murrell said.
