- Daniel Kwan said that his next movie with directing partner Daniel Scheinert will be a "fun sci-fi, action comedy with a big heart."

- The filmmaker said that the film is "taking so long" because "what we're feeling and what we're hearing from the world is very complex and really nuanced."

- The duo's next movie is set to release on Nov. 19, 2027.

Daniel Kwan won three Oscars for *Everything Everywhere All at Once* in 2023 — but it's taking some time to crack his next film.

The director shared the timeline for his upcoming project with his filmmaking partner Daniel Scheinert in an interview with Collider on Friday.

"We're about to shoot this summer, and it is coming out, if all things go to plan, next November of 2027," Kwan told the outlet.

That means the film won't be released until five and a half years after *Everything Everywhere*'s premiere. Kwan explained why his new film is taking so long to develop.

"The only thing you need to know is we are trying to do what we have always done, which is listen very deeply to what is happening in the world and try to internalize that and make something really fun and entertaining that kind of reflects that story back to the world," he said. "So, one of the reasons why it's taking so long is because what we're feeling and what we're hearing from the world is very complex and really nuanced, and there's so much paradox."

Kwan reiterated the challenges of meeting the moment through filmmaking. "To kind of reconcile all those things and put them into one movie, it takes time," he said. "Some trees grow really quickly within a couple of years, some trees take a very long time, and sometimes the work that we do takes a little bit longer."

The filmmaker also revealed the genre of the upcoming movie and hinted toward its tone. "It's going to be fun sci-fi, action comedy with a big heart," he said. "Very existential. All those things that you would hope that one of our movies would be. But as the world gets more complex, I believe one of my jobs as a storyteller is to meet the world where it's at."

Kwan and Scheinert, collectively known as the Daniels, began their directing careers by helming music videos for hits like DJ Snake and Lil Jon's "Turn Down for What" and Foster the People's "Don't Stop (Color on the Walls)." After directing episodes of comedy shows like *NTSF:SD:SUV::* and *Childrens Hospital*, the duo made their feature directorial debut with 2016's *Swiss Army Man*, which starred Paul Dano and Daniel Radcliffe.

After separately directing episodes of *Legion* and *On Becoming a God in Central Florida*, the two filmmakers came back together to direct a 2020 episode of *Awkwafina Is Nora from Queens*. They finished production on *Everything Everywhere* in 2020 and eventually released the film in March 2022.

The film went on to gross over $143 million at the global box office and became one of the most successful films at the Oscars in recent history, earning awards for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, Best Editing, Best Actress for Michelle Yeoh, Best Supporting Actor for Ke Huy Quan, and Best Supporting Actress for Jamie Lee Curtis.

The Daniels' last directorial credit came with a 2024 episode of *Star Wars: Skeleton Crew*. Kwan explained that series creator Jon Watts approached the duo to work on the show prior to *Everything Everywhere*'s release.

"We love Jon, love *Star Wars*, love learning new tech, we love meeting new cast and crew, and we needed the days to keep our healthcare (!!!)," Kwan wrote on Instagram at the time (via Deadline). "So it was an easy yes."

The Daniels signed a five-year deal with Universal in 2022. Two years later, the studio announced that the duo's next film would release on June 12, 2026. The project was later delayed to release on Nov. 19, 2027.
