Evan Rachel Wood is 'sad' about not returning in Practical Magic 2 as Sandra Bullock's daughter

Evan Rachel Wood got candid about not returning to Practical Magic 2 with Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock.
The 38-year-old actress played Sandra's eldest daughter (Kylie Owens) in the first Practical Magic, along with former child actor Alexandra Artrip as the youngest daughter (Antonia Owens). In the upcoming sequel of the 1998 romantic fantasy, Joey King is playing Evan's part and Maisie Williams is playing Alexandra's role.
The sequel was confirmed in 2024 and began filming in July 2025. At The Shards premiere in NYC on Monday, July 27, addressed once more not being asked to return and answered why it was important to speak out about that.

"I read the book and it seems like they're not following the book," the singer began to Entertainment Tonight. "I think in the book it would have made sense to bring me back; I think in the way they’re redoing it and approaching it, it didn't make sense."
"But it is sad, because we bonded with that cast so much as children, and so to miss out on the opportunity to look at that cast and look at that house as an adult and see the history in our eyes, it's something that can't be faked," The Westworld star. "I'm sad that doesn’t get to exist, especially for the fans."

Evan concluded by stating that she still wishes the current cast all the best, especially Joey, and that she hoped the star "had a great time." She also noted that she still has "very fond memories" of making the original.

The sequel is an adaptation of Alice Hoffman's The Book of Magic, which is a follow-up to her novel, Practical Magic. The book inspired the eponymous first film.
Practical Magic, directed by Griffin Dunne, follows the story of two sisters and fellow witches — Sally and Gillian "Gilly" Owens —who are fighting to break a family curse that any man they fall in love with dies.

In the second film, the returning cast members include Sandra and Nicole (who respectively portray Sally and Gilly) as well as Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest as their eccentric aunts.
Alongside Joey and Maisie, the new cast members include Lee Pace, Xolo Maridueña, and Solly McLeod.
Back in July 2025, Evan had spoken out about not being asked to return.

She took to her Instagram Stories and wrote, per PEOPLE, "I am getting asked about this a lot, so l'll just clear it up now; I was not asked to come back and be in the #PracticalMagic sequel. l offered my services, even if it was one scene or one line.
"I was told they are recasting. I am sorry to disappoint the fans. It was not in my control or my choice. I would have happily rejoined my sisters," Evan added.
Practical Magic 2, directed by Susanne Bier, is set to release in theaters in September.
