Shaya Charvet is all grown up.

Charvet—who is the son of David Charvet and Brooke Burke—has teamed up with Los Angeles BURN founder Maria Chase to help launch BUILD, a first-of-its-kind weight lifting program that utilizes LED light and heated infrared technology.

"We've been working on the program— the reps, the sets, the format— over the last 10 months," Charvet, 18, says of collaborating on BUILD with Chase.

Charvet has always been interested in fitness. He grew up playing sports and accompanying his dad to the gym, but he says the various injuries he experienced in high school are what really inspired him to dive into personal training.

"I broke my leg, I had a spine injury, I had surgery on my collarbone — I broke it twice. Fitness and working out in general was the one thing that kind of always stayed consistent, and it was my outlet for pretty much everything," he says. "I realized, 'Wait, there's something I really love, and now I have a chance to help others and show them what works for me when I'm hurting.'"

His favorite part of creating BUILD from the ground up, he says, has been the "trial and error."

"Finding what works and finding what doesn't has been really fun," Charvet adds. "And working with Maria and bouncing the ideas off her— we're very similar in how we think. It's fun to learn as much as I can from her as well."

Chase says she clicked with Shaya "immediately."

"We share a deep interest in fitness and nutrition, and developing BUILD together felt like a natural progression," she says.

Plus, she's been friends with David, who helped her launch BURN, for more than a decade.

"David is my best friend and biggest supporter, and at this point I consider him and both of his kids [Shaya and daughter Heaven] to be family. We bring different strengths to our partnership, which has made us a strong and balanced team," she says.

Charvet says his dad has been instrumental in his fitness journey, too. He says both of his parents instilled in him the belief that "you can do anything you truly put your mind to."

"There's nothing that can stop you if you truly give it everything you have," he says.

When asked what sort of workout regime he follows to maintain his physique, Charvet acknowledges that changes don't happen overnight. He's been training consistently for the last four to five years.

"I weight train six or seven days a week, and I'm focused on nutrition. I eat four to five meals a day. BUILD has made a huge difference because I'm also implementing the infrared light and the red and blue LEDs, and that's really changed the game for me when it comes to recovery. I'm recovering faster," he says.

For Chase, working with Shaya "brought me back to my roots in bodybuilding," she says, and "in many ways it renewed my appreciation for what drew me into fitness professionally. It reminded me of the aspects of weight training that I originally fell in love with and that truly changed my life."

All the discipline it takes to be in such good shape, however, doesn't stop Shaya from the occasional treat.

"Honestly, Dave's Hot Chicken is my go-to," he admits. "If I want to get a cheat meal, that's exactly where I'm going. I'll have a chicken sandwich, I'll have a soda. I'm more of a salty type of guy than sweets."

The rest of the time, though, the teen says he's "pretty strict," and he focuses on eating high protein and whole foods during the week.

"Everyone thinks that it takes some insane and special routine and it really doesn't. It really just takes consistency, three to five days a week, an hour workout, and just the right nutrients," he says. "You've got to sleep, you've got to eat well, you've got to train well. That's all it is. It's three important things, and it's not as complicated as everyone says."

Chase, meanwhile, has but one fitness tip that she says has remained the same for more than a decade: lift weights!

"It's never too late to start. Nothing else can substitute for it and nothing else compares. Lifting weights truly is the closest thing we have to a fountain of youth, and one of the most effective tools for optimizing health and longevity," she says.

As Charvet prepares to graduate from high school, he's looking forward to creating a career for himself in the fitness space. When asked if he's ready for all of the attention the BURN campaign might bring him, he laughs.

"I don't know! Honestly, I'm just trying to stay level-headed and consistent," he says. "I don't know what to expect, but I'm excited to really build a community and show everyone what we've been doing."
