Warning: this post contains spoilers for the season 2 finale of Daredevil: Born Again.

Season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again came to an end on May 6

In the final minutes of the finale episode, a familiar face returned for the first time in seven years for an emotional reunion that delighted fans

Star Krysten Ritter said she was "so excited" to have the actor back

Luke Cage is finally home.

In the final minutes of the season 2 finale of Daredevil: Born Again, which premiered on Wednesday, May 6, on Disney+, Mike Colter returned as the comic book superhero. He reunited with Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter) and Danielle, the daughter he and Jessica share.

Ritter, 44, told Entertainment Weekly she was "so excited" to have Colter, 49, back as her partner. Fans last saw him as Luke in season 3 of Marvel's Jessica Jones in 2019.

When the idea of his return came up on set, Ritter, 44, said she "loved it so much that I was like, 'We have to do it, and the scene should be like this, and I'm gonna call Mike right now and tell him to do it.' "

"Jessica and Luke Cage have this amazing history and this amazing chemistry, and seeing him walk in the door, it was emotional," she added.

Colter's return goes hand-in-hand with Ritter returning as Jessica Jones in the latest season. "One of the things we really wanted to embrace with Jessica coming back was to build out her world," showrunner Dario Scardapane told EW.

"In the comic books, Jessica and Luke Cage are a couple and have a child. That's huge. That's story gold," he continued.

Though it was just for "one short scene," Colter was "all in" about returning, Scardapane said. "He's just a very, very busy man. He's doing, like, three other shows at this point."

Luke's reunion with Jessica and his daughter lays the foundation for him to play a larger role in the series moving forward, the showrunner confirmed. "We start that picture of those three people, that family, at the end of episode 8 in this season. The questions and the story that starts there play into season 3, absolutely," he told EW.

Ritter similarly teased that Colter will be back for more in season 3. "We didn't know if it would be Mike or not, but I was so excited because it sets up what's to come and gives us a little bit of a window into where their story could go," she said.

The season 2 finale of Daredevil: Born Again is now streaming on Disney+.
