Colman Domingo never disappoints on a red carpet, particularly when the stakes are high. At this Monday’s Met Gala, arguably the red carpet with the biggest fashion stakes, Domingo worked with Valentino to create a look inspired by the T. rex in Basquiat’s iconic painting Pez Dispenser, using its colors as the template for his checkered jacket. Like the crown atop the dinosaur’s head, he finished the look with jewelry from Boucheron’s Serpent Bohème Gold & Onyx collection—pieces he was the first to wear on the red carpet.

It marks the actor’s third Met Gala appearance and his second year collaborating with Valentino. Last year, when he served as co-chair, he wore a much-celebrated electric blue cape.

Ahead of this year’s Met Gala, Domingo took us along as he got ready at the Mark Hotel.

Boucheron creative director, Claire Choisne, said that seeing Domingo “unveil the Serpent Bohème Gold & Onyx collection in exclusivity at the Met Gala is a true source of pride.” She continued, “His singular sense of style echoes the spirit of ‘Fashion is Art,’ where allure becomes an expression, a statement. Through his lens, this collection reveals its essence—the duality of an eclipse, where light and shadow coexist.”

For the after parties, Domingo changed into an all-black Campillo suit with a cinched silver belt, keeping his Boucheron jewels on as accessories.
