Batman fans are demanding one thing before DC moves forward with its Poison Ivy series. The newly announced HBOproject has divided audiences over the studio’s approach to its villain-focused lineup.

Fans are asking for a Batman movie before Poison Ivy series

HBO is developing a Poison Ivy series with The Penguin showrunner Lauren LeFranc in talks to produce, according to Deadline. The project will remain separate from Matt Reeves’ The Batman universe. The announcement has since sparked debate among fans who want DC to prioritize a DCU Batman movie first.

Several users questioned why DC keeps expanding its villain roster without introducing Batman in the new DCU. One user wrote that this marks “another Gotham character before DCU Batman is introduced.” Another asked whether Batman will ever appear on screen in the new universe.

Other fans pushed back on the criticism. Some pointed out that a DCU Batman film is already in development under the title The Brave and the Bold. One user noted that the Poison Ivy series does not even have a script yet. Another suggested DCU Batman could arrive by 2029, after the Reevesverse concludes.

Some users offered a different perspective on the studio’s strategy. One fan argued that DC appears to be building Batman’s rogues gallery through standalone projects first. That user suggested The Batman Part II could close out the Reevesverse entirely. Another fan agreed and said establishing core threats before Batman’s arrival makes narrative sense.

The creative conversation also extended beyond frustration. One user proposed that LeFranc should write the DCU Batman movie, calling her a strong fit after The Penguin. Another fan said DC should prioritize an eco-terrorism show, given Poison Ivy’s environmental activism roots.

LeFranc previously created and ran the sci-fi series Impulse and wrote for Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Her work on The Penguin, starring Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti, earned recognition for its grounded approach to comic book storytelling. The Poison Ivy series has not announced its cast, writers, or release window.
